Building A Natural Haircare Regime

Sourcing a range of effective natural haircare products can be a bit of a minefield. If you’re committed to a gentle, ethical and eco-friendly beauty regime, you might find that it’s all to easy to fall down when it comes to your haircare of choice. Often pumped with SLSs, or packaged in plastic galore, you might find yourself on a mission more often than not, to sustain your sustainable routine.

But at KOHA Beauty, we’d like to help change that. And whilst our haircare journey has only just begun, with the recent launch of our new solid shampoo and conditioner bars, we’d like to help you all to source the right products for a natural haircare regime that will not only be kind to your hair, but to the environment too.

Wash and Go

For cleansing and conditioning, we have the perfect solution – of course it’s our new Solid Shampoo and Solid Conditioner bars! Plastic-free, zero-waste and 100% sustainable, this is the gold star in natural haircare (if we do say so ourselves).

Start your regime with our solid shampoo; it’s handmade and vegan-friendly, created with a blend of nourishing oils and gentle surfactants. The SLS- and paraben-free formula will rinse away product build-up, grease and daily dirt to leave your hair feeling super-clean and looking soft and shiny.

Conditioning the hair is key to maintain its condition (well, duh!), so we’ve created a super-nourishing conditioner bar that will rehydrate and protect your delicate strands, for soft, strong and glossy hair. Expect a creamy blend of oils and butters to intensively nourish the hair, naturally.

Treatments

Hair treatments are an essential part of an effective haircare routine, but we know it can be hard to source eco-friendly, natural versions on the high street.

We think that the basis of a hair treatment routine should be a great hair mask and a nourishing treatment oil, to protect your delicate strands – and luckily, both are easy to find in your supermarket aisle!

For a hair mask that will hydrate without imparting nasties, there’s nothing better than coconut oil.  Simply microwave a few spoonfuls for ten seconds until it’s melted, and then massage into the mid-lengths and ends of dry hair. Once applied, wrap your hair in a towel and leave it on for as long as possible, before rinsing out and shampooing as normal.

You can use sweet almond oil to hydrate dry ends. A bottle of this costs just a couple of pounds and you can use it to moisturise hair, nails and skin – it’s a real multitasker. Simply pour a few drops into your palms and rub them together, and then massage through your mid-lengths and ends every time you wash your hair (or when it’s looking a little dry).

Styling

There isn’t much choice on the market when it comes to natural haircare products, but one place you should check out for a variety of options is Lush; there’s everything from natural hair gel to styling creams, all helping you on your way to eco-friendly hair.

We appreciate that buying all of these hair products can all add up though, so if you’re on a budget, you might be interested in a DIY that we’re particularly proud of – a homemade salt spray, to give your locks beachy texture and soft waves.

Simply find yourself a spray bottle (glass preferably, let’s all try and cut down on that pesky plastic waste!), and pour in a cup of warm water. Add in a tablespoon of sea salt, and shake until the salt dissolve. Then, melt a tablespoon of coconut oil and pour that in too. Add a few drops of essential oil (jasmine is lovely for hair) and shake together – and there you have it, a homemade and completely natural salt spray.

Tools

Your tools can be natural too! The Body Shop are a great source of natural hair tools; for curly girls, the detangling comb, made of natural and Fairtrade materials, is a great choice. If you prefer brushes, they have a range of bamboo brushes too, which are again all Fairtrade-friendly and made of ethically-sourced, natural materials, to care for your hair and the environment at the same time.

The best natural haircare tool though? The air around you! Switch off the hairdryer (even just once a week) and allow your hair to dry naturally; your hair will love the change in routine and of course, it’s kinder to the world around you too.
